The rings (“granthi”)

There are several ring-shaped connection points in the spinal column. In the yogic tradition, these are called “Granthi” (knots).

Traditionally three are mentioned:

  • the Brahma granthi, which is connected with the base center;
  • the Vishnu granthi, which is placed by some sources near or connected with the navel chakra and by other sources near or connected with the heart chakra;
  • the Rudra granthi, which is placed by some sources near or connected with the throat chakra and by other sources near or connected with the forehead chakra.

The traditional sources contradict each other as to where these rings are located. Some say that the Sushumna goes through them, which would mean that they are located in the spine, other sources say that they are located at the chakras.

The drawing below shows the main (9 mm) subtle energy channels (figure 37) shows the position of these rings. This drawing is not an artistic interpretation, unlike most chakra representations, but a technical drawing giving the exact location of the chakras, the main nadis and rings.

The rings behind the chakras

Behind and directly connected with every chakra there is a ring, located just inside the physical body. The chakras themselves are located just outside the physical body.

The rings in the spine

In addition to the seven rings behind the chakras, there are five blue rings in the spine. The central energy channels (nadis) from the seven chakras are all connected with these five rings. The central channel from the base chakra goes straight through the five rings all the way up to the crown chakra. The central channels from the other five chakras are all connected to a different ring in the spine, see figure 37.

The big channels are 9 mm across and the rings are 9 + 9 + 9 = 27 mm across. Just above the four lowest blue rings is a white flame, see figure 49. The five blue rings in the spine and the seven rings behind the chakras connect the big 9 mm channels to each other.

The traditional yoga texts mention the piercing of the granthis (rings). When the kundalini is activated, it has to move through the seven chakra rings and the five spinal rings. When doing so it can encounter blockages that the kundalini has to break through. These blockages consist of residues of lower energies. Once the kundalini is permanently activated, the channels become purified and the blockages are removed. After this the system of channels will have an increased ability to transport greater amounts of subtle energy and to process subtle energy of much higher levels. Once this happens, the ability to have access to higher states of consciousness will greatly increase.

The rings in the hands

There are two ring-shaped centers in the hands, one in the left hand and one in the right hand. When the yellow-colored stream from the heart chakra to the ring in the hand is strongly activated, there is a strong feeling of almost physical warmth.

In addition to this, there are small pink/rose-colored channels coming from the spleen chakra (see figure 39 ↓ ). When this pink/rose energy in the hand(s) is activated, one feels a cool, cold stream of energy.

The notion that there is some kind of energy transfer through the laying on of hands is found throughout the world. In Judaism, the custom is called “blessing”, and in the Old Testament priests were ordained by the laying on of hands. It is also found in Christianity, when the Holy Spirit is invoked during baptisms, at the ordination of bishops, priests and ministers, and at other church sacraments and ceremonies.

Within the Yogic tradition, there is the concept of psychic healing which deals with the transference of prâna, etheric/vitality energy.
