Siddhis, spiritual powers, gifts of the spirit, charismata, genius
Divinely conferred power or talent                                   Marinus Jan Marijs

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Siddhis are spiritual, paranormal, supernatural, or otherwise magical powers, abilities, and attainments that are the products of spiritual advancement through sadhana (spiritual practices), such as meditation and yoga. There is a related Buddhist term, “Iddhi“, that translates as “psychic powers”, and is often used interchangeably. People who have attained one or more Siddhis are formally known as siddhas. The attainment of Siddhis are typically independent of one another, although it is not uncommon for many Siddhis to arise simultaneously out of the proper conducive state of consciousness.

Etymology

Siddhi is a Sanskrit noun which can be translated as “perfection”, “accomplishment”, “attainment”, or “success”. In Tamil the word Siddhar/Chitthar refers to someone who has attained the Siddhic powers & knowledge. Chitta is pure consciousness/knowledge in Sanskrit also.

Origins

The earliest appearance in Indian history of the idea that magical powers (Pāli iddhi) are generated by spiritual practices, (Pāli jhāna) is the account that appears in the Buddhist canon, in the [Sāmaññaphalasutta] of the [Dīghanikāya].

The Yoga Sutras, of which Patanjali compiled around 400 BCE from many older traditions, goes into great depth about how to obtain the various Siddhis through a scientific-yogic approach.

The term siddhi is later found in the Mahabharata. As a term in the Manusmriti, the Laws of Manu, it refers to the settlement of a debt.

Usage in Hinduism

In the Pancatantra, a siddhi may be the term for any unusual skill or faculty or capability. (Wikipedia)

Concerning Spiritual Gifts

A similar concept is to be found in the bible by St. Paul:

1 Corinthians 12 New International Version (NIV):

12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

……. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[d]? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.

Spiritual gifts

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

For the gifts listed in Isaiah 11:2-3.

In Christianity, spiritual gifts (or charismata) are endowments which may be given by the Holy Spirit. These are the supernatural graces which individual Christians need (or did in the days of the Apostles need) to fulfill the mission of the church. They are described in the New Testament, primarily in 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, and Ephesians 4. 1 Peter 4 also touches on the spiritual gifts. The gifts are related to both seemingly “natural” abilities and seemingly more “miraculous” abilities, empowered by the Holy Spirit. The two major opposing theological positions on their nature is that they ceased long ago or that they continue (Cessationism versus Continuationism).

Spiritual gifts are distinguished from other graces of the Holy Spirit, such as the fruit of the Spirit and the Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, in that the charismata are to be used for the benefit of others while the fruit of the Spirit and other gifts result in personal sanctification.

Biblical and theological overview

The New Testament contains several lists of spiritual gifts, most authored by St. Paul. While each list is unique, there is overlap.

1 Corinthians 12:8-10

1 Corinthians 12:28

Christians believe that the charismata were foretold by the Prophet Joel (2:28) and promised by Christ (Gospel of Mark 16:17,18). This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost and elsewhere as the church spread. In order to correct abuses concerning the spiritual gifts at Corinth, Paul devoted much attention to spiritual gifts in his First Epistle to the Corinthians (chapters 12-14).

In 1 Corinthians 12, two Greek terms are translated as “spiritual gifts”. In verse 1, the word pneumatika (“spirituals” or “things of the Spirit”) is used. In verse 4, charisma is used. This word is derived from the word charis, which means “grace“. In verses 5 and 6, the words diakonia (translated “administrations”, “ministries”, or “service”) and energemata (“operations” or “inworkings”) are used in describing the nature of the spiritual gifts. In verse 7, the term “manifestation (phanerosis) of the Spirit” is used.

From these scriptural passages, Christians understand the spiritual gifts to be enablements or capacities that are divinely bestowed upon individuals. Because they are freely given by God, these cannot be earned or merited. Though worked through individuals, these are operations or manifestations of the Holy Spirit—not of the gifted person. They are to be used for the benefit of others, and in a sense they are granted to the church as a whole more than they are given to individuals. There is diversity in their distribution—an individual will not possess all of the gifts. The purpose of the spiritual gifts is to edify (build up), exhort (encourage), and comfort the church.

It is generally acknowledged that Paul did not list all of the gifts of the Spirit, and many believe that there are as many gifts as there are needs in the body of Christ. The gifts have at times been organized into distinct categories based on their similarities and differences to other gifts. Some divide them into three categories using Old Testament offices. “Prophetic” gifts include any gift involving teaching, encouraging, or rebuking others. “Priestly” gifts include showing mercy and care for the needy or involve intercession before God. “Kingly” gifts are those involving church administration or government. Others categorize them into “gifts of knowledge” (word of wisdom, word of knowledge, distinguishing between spirits), “gifts of speech” (tongues, interpretation, prophecy), and “gifts of power” (faith, healing, miracles).
The gifts have also been categorized as those that promote the inner growth of the church (apostle, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, teaching, word of wisdom/knowledge, helps, and administration) and those that promote the church’s outer development (faith, miracles, healing, tongues, interpretation of tongues).Proponents of cessationism distinguish between the “extraordinary”, “miraculous”, or “sign” gifts (such as prophecy, tongues, and healing) and the other gifts. Cessationism is held by some
Protestants, especially from the Calvinist tradition, who believe that miraculous gifts and their operations were limited to early Christianity and “ceased” afterward. Other Protestants, mainly Pentecostals and charismatics, adhere to the continuationist position, believing that all the spiritual gifts are distributed among Christians by the Holy Spirit and that they are normative in contemporary Christianity. In addition, Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy also continue to believe in and make use of all of the spiritual gifts.

Other spiritual gifts are found in the Old Testament such as:

  • Craftsmanship (such as the special abilities given to artisans who constructed the Tabernacle in Exodus 35:30-33)
  • Interpretation of dreams (e.g. Joseph and Daniel)
  • Composing spiritual music, poetry, and prose

Within Roman Catholic theology there are the four principal qualities (‘Dotes’):

(“Dotes sivc gratiae Spiritus: The gifts of the sublime Spirit ”):
(a) Incorruptibilitas: Incorruptibility and immortality.
(b) Claritas: Brightness, glory.
(c) Agility: The power of moving from place to place, so as to be immediately  anywhere that we wish.
(d) Subtilitas: Subtlety or penetrability, that is, being able to pass through material objects.

These qualities are encountered in an Out of the Body Experience.

In Sunni Islam, karamat refers to supernatural wonders performed by Muslim saints. In the technical vocabulary of Islamic religious sciences, the singular form karama has a sense similar to charism, a favor or spiritual gift freely bestowed by God. The marvels ascribed to Muslim saints have included supernatural physical actions, predictions of the future, and “interpretation of the secrets of hearts”. (Wikipedia)

That spiritual powers develop with contact with a transcendent force has been claimed by some of the greatest philosophers, the great Hebrew prophets, Spiritual geniuses like Socrates, Plato, Christ,
St. Paul……

One could ask the question what is the supporting evidence for the existence of these powers?  In many cases there are only anecdotal stories and  phenomenological descriptions, which do not deliver proof.
Cross-cultural data goes one step further, but are only a starting point.

However for some of this spiritual powers there is more supporting evidence

15 or more of the greatest classical composers, claimed that their compositions where inspired by a transcendent source.
The reality of Out of the body experiences is supported by academic research,
That reincarnation exist is supported by professor Ian Stevenson’s research of more than 2500 cases.

The existence of telepathy has by the standards of any other area of science now been proven by meta-analyses.

Teleology finds it support in the fine-tuning in: cosmology, stellar nucleosynthesis, chemistry, biology… and so on.

And synchronicities with multiple independent discoveries.

An account is given of the exceptional memory of the late Professor A. C. Aitken who was also a distinguished mathematician and mental calculator. Examples are given of his performance in memory-span tasks and his recall of artificial materials learnt under experimental conditions 27 years earlier. His memory is stronger than average in all respects but normal in mode of functioning. It relates to his comprehending materials in terms of rich patterns of multiple, often recondite, properties. There is an academic study into the siddhis by Dean Radin called “Supernatural”

Dean Radin, PhD, is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and Distinguished Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Book: ‘Supernormal’ (2013)

Supernormal: Science, Yoga, and the Evidence for Extraordinary Psychic Abilities investigates the nature of psi phenomena in the context of yoga and the yogic tradition of siddhis (psychic powers). In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the siddhis are presented as neither magical or divine, but as the natural outcome of intense meditation practice. Radin points out that some can be investigated in the laboratory in controlled tests. Individual chapters focus on the evidence to date for precognition, telepathy, clairvoyance and mind-matter interactions, including experiments carried out with experienced meditators.

As with Radin’s earlier books, Supernormal includes extensive critiques of skeptical views and responses. It concludes by discussing how a greater understanding of psi phenomena achieved by means of experimental research might contribute to the development of a new idea of reality in Western thought.

In an interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMYDk6fYFw0  5.28-8.28

Radin points to the fact that Siddhis aren’t uncommon, or sporadic:
“…when people say how do I get better at this, my first suggestion is meditation because that’s what it’s all about, about attention training and historically we know especially from the yoga literature that if you’re a diligent meditator, you will begin to encounter all kinds of interesting mental phenomena, the ancients would have called them siddhis, in Sanskrit meaning special power, in English we call it psychic phenomena.
… we did a survey recently…. In the survey we asked people within the United States in the general population and also a subset of scientists and engineers, how often were ever did they have certain kinds of experiences that were not described as psychic but the description would require a psychic experience.
So for example we might have one of the experiences might be that you felt that you were in communication at a distance you knew their thoughts or their feelings so we can label that telepathy but we didn’t use that word we just said did you have an experience of these type?
|So we had 25 of these different experiences that people commonly report, they have various labels which we call psychic and so we asked two questions, one was of these 25 which of these have you personally experienced? And then from that we were able to tell whether they had at least one such experience, one of the 25. So among the general population 94% of the people responded that they had at least one of the 25 different kind of experiences so this is extremely common in terms of experience. But you get when you ask questions about believe, especially believe we use the labels that are psychic labels like do you believe in telepathy you get very different answers because some people are thinking well then you know I don’t know if I know exactly what telepathy is and they give another answer. So we were specifically then asking about what have you experienced 94% of the general population so then we looked at the subset of scientists and engineers who answered this question and we expected, well most scientists and engineers are either not interested in these things or at least not taught about them or even taught about that they don’t exist, so we thought that we would get a much lower percentage. But in fact we got 93%.
93% of scientists and engineers who do that as a profession have more or less the same percentage of experiences that we would call psychic as the general population.
So is this common? Yeah it is extremely common.”
